How Did You Get into Boudoir? | Boudoir Carlisle PA | Shannon Hemauer

Originally posted July 07, 2017 I don’t talk often about myself on my social media, but I wanted to share with you how I got into photography because it’s a question I’m asked often. In 2013 I asked my husband for a “nice camera” because I wanted to take better pictures of our two boys. I’ll explain further down why I put “nice camera” in quotes. So, my sweet husband bought me a Nikon D3200, which is an entry-level DSLR. Armed with the kit lenses, I set out to start taking pictures of our boys—I had a lot of fun playing around! After having the camera for a week or two, I decided to challenge myself and learn how to shoot manual—I recommend Click it Up a Notch, which is the site I went to learn the basics! The site’s owner, Courtney, has a wonderful way of explaining the exposure triangle, what metering means, how to Back Button Focus (BBF), etc. It’s a great beginning resource for anyone just starting out. Armed with the exposure cheat sheets to help me figure out what shutter speed, ISO (how much light gets to the sensor), and aperture (how much is in focus) I needed, I set out to tell the camera what to do. But, my then-2-year-old and 9-month-old boys wouldn’t sit still long enough for me to think through my settings (they still don’t sit still to be honest), so I reached out to a friend to see if she’d let me photograph her older kids, which I can happily say she did. This lead me to deciding I was going to challenge myself to shoot a different genre each month for the rest of 2013, so one month I shot a maternity session, the next a lifestyle newborn (meaning the

Boudoir before and after transformation Carlisle PA photographer

It seems like a lifetime ago that I was able to do a boudoir photoshoot at my Carlisle studio… But enough about that! Let’s talk about Heather’s session, which is the last one I did before the Shelter-at-Home order was given. This is Heather’s second session with me—her first photoshoot was in 2018—and this time she was celebrating losing about 30 pounds. “What can I say? Shannon is the BEST!! This was my second session with Shannon and her team. Sure, I was a little nervous but as soon as I stepped into her beautiful studio they were gone. It was like getting together with old friends. So if you’re on the fence about doing a session, I’m here to tell you DO IT!! It will be one of the best decision you will make for yourself. Shannon is magic when it comes to posing, lightening and angles. You can bet I’ll be doing a third session.” Heather Heather has amazing legs but no natural-defined waist—she’s normally boxy in shape—but with the help of an underbust corset and my posing direction, I was able to give her the curves she wanted. I made sure to show her the back of the camera so she could see how amazing she looks without postproduction—those curves are all from a well-fitting corset and the Power of Posing! Looks like fun? It IS fun! Contact me today for information on my boudoir photoshoots. A big thank you to my lead stylist, Nath Kreider, for doing another great job on Heather’s hair and makeup; and to Dianna, my assistant, for helping me keep things running smoothly. Originally posted April 18, 2016. Session done at my then home-studio. Client Interview: Jess As an incentive/reward for reaching her goal weight, Jess shot a boudoir session with me—she chats about her experience in this client interview. How long have you been waiting to do a boudoir/contemporary glamour session and what made you decide now was the time to do one? I waited several months due to wanting to reach a weight loss goal prior to doing one! I wanted to do the photoshoot to capture the hard work that I did to get that far!!! What made you decide I was the photographer to work with to do your boudoir/contemporary glamour session? I did research on the internet and found your site. Your portfolio was wonderful and all of the [testimonials] had nothing but great things to say. Once meeting with you over Skype I knew you’d be the perfect match! What was your favorite part out of the entire experience? The planning, the session, the reveal? The whole thing was my favorite part!!! From Skyping, to picking out the dress, to the entire session, and of course the reveal!!!!! What did you think when you saw that first image of yourself? Wow! I can’t believe how far I have come! You captured exactly what I had hoped you would! How did shooting this session with me change your outlook on yourself? Are you more confident? Absolutely. You can look at yourself every day in the mirror with clothes and think you look one way, but until you see yourself in photographs like that you don’t realize how truly beautiful you are! Before this experience, did you feel you were photogenic? If no, do you feel you are photogenic now? I had been in pageants my whole life so being

Angelica has such stunning blue eyes! The way lead stylist, Nath, did the makeup really makes those baby blues pop! Below you’ll find a few images from Angelica’s 2019 session, sprinkled through her testimonial. I’d been contemplating doing a boudoir session for about 2-3 years. I spoke with several photographers who offer boudoir, but never felt a connection with them. When I spoke with Shannon, I felt a connection with her right away and I agreed to do the session. Shannon walked me through every step of the way, creating a Pinterest inspiration board, discussing outfits before the session, and constant email updates. Even up to the day of my session I wanted to back out, but when I arrived to the studio, Shannon walked me through everything and made my nervousness disappear. NO words can truly described the amazing time I had that day in the studio and seeing the outcome. Want to do a boudoir session but don’t because afraid to? You need to speak with Shannon—it is so worth it. If you are interested in booking a session, I’d like to explain how I’m handling everything on my end during the social distancing: I’m following the CDC/State of PA’s guidelines that non-essential businesses’ physical locations be closed at the current time. With that said, I am still doing phone consults—this is where we’ll discuss in detail what you can expect/flow of session/pricing & product/you can ask questions. All of the planning for a boudoir session (initial phone consult, Pinterest inspiration board, wardrobe consult) is done online. So while the session itself may need to wait, the planning portion can be done smoothly. I’m booking sessions for June, July, August, and September 2020. If we need to postpone/reschedule your session due to the Coronavirus, we will without financial penalty to
